25 Feb

Got-Craft-PostcardsOh, hey! It’s been awhile hasn’t it? Our holiday break turned into a new year break and here we are almost at the end of February! So, what’s new with all of you? We both started work contracts at the beginning of the year and have been busy getting those set up. We’ve also been waiting patiently for more updates on our shop space for London Fields Shoppe. If you have been following along, we first viewed the space 39 weeks ago, signed our lease 18 weeks ago, and are happy to announce that we finally received a permit for phase 1 of our renovations! It’s definitely been a long process, but we are super excited to move forward with an expected opening in early May 2014! We’ll be posting more pictures once we get everything going, so please follow along here as what will be one crazy ride! Thank you to everybody that visited us at our pop-up shop last month. If you missed it or have your heart set on something, we’ve been shooting products all week and will have them listed in the online shop soon.

Also, I’m jumping in here quickly to let everybody know that applications for the Got Craft? 2014 spring edition close at midnight (PST) on Friday, February 28th. Here are the details for the upcoming event:

beginner hand lettering workshop

19 Nov

Sign-Painting-3Sign-Painting-1Sign-Painting-2Did you attend the screening of the Sign Painter movie last June? Sign Painter, John Lennig from BIG TOP Sign Arts, will be at Got Craft? hosting a workshop discussing brush lettering in general and specifically the BullNose letter style, one of the most basic of hand painted styles. Consisting of 6 basic strokes, John will teach you how to create both upper and lower case letters as well as proper brush handling, brushcare, and the types of paints used.

The first half of the hands-on workshop will cover the above, along with getting your brushes into the paint and practicing the 6 basic strokes. While the second half will move into letters and finish up with the creation of a few pieces to take home. “The Swoop” will also be discussed, demonstrated, and if time allows, be put to use in the finished pieces.

You’ll take home:
A 1-2 word piece using both upper and lower case in the BullNose lettering style
A #6 Langnickel Nocturna brush
A small container of paint

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Maritime Labour Centre, 1880 Triumph Street

update: workshop is sold out!

****************

In 1965, John moved to Vancouver from California and over the next 17 years, he would find himself working in 7 different sign shops before opening up his own business in 1982. With the popularity of computers in the late 1980’s and 1990’s, John realized that he was doing less and less hand lettering and decided to sell his shop in the year 2000 and go back to strictly doing what he loves. BIG TOP Sign Arts was born specializing in hand lettering, gold leaf, and later on, pinstriping. Last September, he celebrated 50 years as a sign painter and looks forward to sharing his skills!

guest post :: the little destination that could

25 Apr

VEV_GuestPost_1To celebrate our new home in the gym at Templeton Secondary School (727 Templeton Drive at Turner), we invited Vancouver East Village to share a post with us on what makes this neighbourhood such a great place to visit!

A few years ago, when people would ask where I live & shop, they could never seem to get a mental map of the area around Nanaimo & E.Hastings. Even many East Van folks seemed not to know. Then I’d say ‘you know, around Donald’s Market, (not the one on Commercial Drive)’. After a few moments they’d say ‘Oh, yeah, there’s not much around there…”  It’s true, we had a plethora of vacant shops and the good ones were few and far between at that time. Well, things have changed a little. People now recognize that the (now named) Vancouver East Village is actually a chill place to eat and to shop.

Hastings Sunrise residents shopping for their meals love supporting our long time merchants like Wheelhouse Seafoods, Rio Friendly Meats and Donald’s Market, but there is more going on over here than food!

VEV_GuestPost_2VEV_GuestPost_4VEV_GuestPost_3New endeavors like Tiny Finery, feature local artisans work in a bright & tiny location that is quickly becoming the go-to shop for gifts & cards. My City Photos offers unusual photo shoots and an outstanding quality of work. Black Rook Bakehouse and East Village Bakery, are directly across the street from one another and neither are to be missed. Walk towards the mountain views, past Pandora Park and downhill to Dundas where you’ll find Far Out Coffee Post, an amazing little neighbourhood gem of a cafe and lunch stop in a most unusual location at Templeton on Dundas. Into craft beers? How about free tastings at Parallel 49 Craft Brewery or Powell St. Craft Brewery, both walkable from the Got Craft?.

A big thanks to Vancouver East Village for giving us a tour of their neighbourhood!
