field trip :: maltby street

20 Aug

Last weekend started off with a lunch date and then the arrival of our house guests from Cambridge. Seeking a weekend adventure in London from a local’s perspective, this was the perfect time to check out Maltby Street.

Past the long queues of Borough Market, the London Dungeons and the crazy of London Bridge station is an area called Bermondsey. Amid a block of housing estates, Maltby Street is a gastronomic delight for foodies. Not to be mistaken as a “market”, Maltby is a small gathering of London’s finest purveyors of food and drink opening its doors for the public to see what they do and to do their weekend food shopping. The list of stalls here is quite impressive including Monmouth Coffee, Neal’s Yard dairy and bakery, The Kernal Brewery and La Grotta Ices (see above for my lemon apple mint sorbet!).

Maltby Street, London SE1 – open Saturdays 9-2pm
